Melissano’s Municipality Subscribes to the “European Charter of San Gimignano”

Once again, The South of Italy,looks interested about the issues of the Unaccompanied Migrant Minors and Separated Children and after Lecce’s Municipality has joined , Melissano  officially has become involved in the journey of the European Charter of San Gimignano.  On November 8th the Municipal Council of Melissano approved the membership as “Supporting Partner”.

From January to October 2017, 14.000 Unaccompanied Migrant Minors moved to Italy. 14.000 children were forced to make an attempt to reach a different country, on their own.

The most worrying data is that 5000 of  the 25.8000 Unaccompanied Migrant Minors that arrived in Italy in 2016 disappeared without trace.

Other events are planned in Apulia Region with the partnership of Lecce and Melissano’s Municipalities, which will organize a Conference jointly with others Municipalities, some Voluntary Organizations, Carretera Central, San Gimignano’s Municipality and all the Project’s partners.

Sensitise the people

The “Charter of San Gimignano” brings together in a single text the fundamental and inalienable Rights of  the Unaccompanied Foreign Children.

The aims of the Charter are:

  • Involving the Italian amd European Municipalities and the Cities, as well as the Organizations from the Civil Society, in the creation of a caring culture to the younger people: it’s them, without any difference of colour, that will build the European future.
  • Sensitise the people, the Organizations from the Civil Society and the Institutions to the social values of the solidarity, of the reception and to the defence of the Civil Rights and to oppose to the spread of xenophobic and racist events within the European Union.

The project of the “European Charter of San Gimignano” it’s promoted by the association Carretera Central under the auspices of San Gimignano’s Municipality and with a large and important partnership.

It’s started the journey that will bring to submit the Charter to the European Parliament from the South of Italy to Central Europe. Next planned events will take place in, Sicily, Calabria, Basilicata, Campania, Marche, Lazio, Tuscany, Lombardy, Germany, Spain, Greece, France, Sweden and in many others to be defined.
