Press Release European Charter of San Gimignano

The city of Lecce subscribes to the “European Charter of San Gimignano”, joining the campaign. An inclusive and open City

Once again, the South comes first: after the presentation at the “Fiera del Levante” on September 12th, the City of Lecce officially joined Charter’s campaign.
Year after year the number of children that, move to a different Country without their parents, forced to run away from wars, poverty and violence, increases. Only in Italy, in 2016, five thousand children have disappeared without trace.

The Municipality of Lecce subscribes to the “European Charter of San Gimignano for the rights of the Unaccompanied Migrant Minors”.

“The Municipality of Lecce decided to subscribe to the “European Charter of San Gimigano for the rights of the Unaccompanied Migrant Minors” because we strongly believe in the need to protect the weaker members of the population, the most vulnerable ones. This initiative as the others that we join with no charge for the administration, has the aim at first to turn our city open and inclusive, respectful tothe needs and of the rights of everybody, especially of the weakest, in this case the children. Raising awareness to the others’ reception, educating to embrace the differences and opposing every form of prejudice and hate is our future direction.”

Other events are planned in Apulia region in partneship with the Minucipality of Lecce, the Carretera Central, the Municipality of San Gimignano and Other Partners supporting the.

Sensitise people

The “Charter of San Gimignao” brings together in a single text the fundamental and inalienable rights of the children and the Unaccompanied Foreign Children.

The aim is to involve the Italian and European Municipalities and Cities, as well as Voluntary Organizations from the Civil Society, in the creation of a caring culture to the young people: it’s them, without any difference of colour, that will build the European future.
Sensitise people, the Voluntary Organizations of the Civil Society and the Institutions to the social values of the solidarity, of the reception and to the Civil Rights and to oppose the spread of xenophobic and racist events within the European Union.
The roadmap of the “European Charter of San Gimignano” it’s promoted by the association Carretera Central under the auspices of San Gimignano’s Municipality supported by a large and important partnership (www.cartadisangimignano.eu).

The journey has started: it will bring the Charter to be submitted to the European Parliament from the South of Italy to the Central Europe. Next foreseen events will take place in, Sicily, Calabria, Basilicata, Campania, Marche, Lazio, Tuscany, Lombardy, Germany, Spain, Greece, France, Sweden and in many others to be defined.
